What We Actually Do

A dehumidifier that runs without collecting water is doing nothing but adding heat and noise to your basement, and the causes are usually straightforward. The most common is a coil that has frozen because the unit is operating below its rated ambient temperature — many dehumidifiers cannot work properly under about 60°F, and a cool basement in spring or fall pushes them right into that range. Others fail at the humidistat, which stops sensing correctly and either runs the unit constantly or never starts it. Drain problems are their own category: internal condensate pumps clog and fail, and gravity drain lines get blocked or routed uphill.
